1). Math Millionaire
Grades 5-8Math Millionaire is a game based on the game "So You Want to Be a Millionaire". In this game, students answer both word problems and computation problems to earn money. Questions cover a variety of topics including fractions, geometry, decimals, percentages, and averages. Students may "phone a friend", choose 50:50, or ask the audience for help on questions. It is a engaging game for students and helps develop their math skills.
2). Math Forum @Drexel
Grades K - 12This exceptional site contains resources for teachers, students and parents alike. In the Math forum student center, students are challenged with problems of the week or they can always “Ask Dr. Math” their questions.
In the Teachers Place, there are resources for teachers including math tools, Web links, newsgroups, and articles as well as information on workshops.
3). Moneyville
Grades 4-8The Moneyville Web site provides two online activities for students. Click on Get Real and students learn about budgets by making choices about how to spend their money. They decide on what purchases to make and learn how to save money. In Lemonade Stand, students learn about supply and demand as they run their own lemonade stand.
A teacher resource guide is provided. It has various links to topics on economics, money, and other math topics.4). Math Playground
Grades 2-8Math Playground features games, puzzles and hundreds of interactive word problems for elementary and middle school level students. On this site, students can practice their math skills, play games, and have some fun. The site includes math manipulatives, word problems, logic puzzles, math games, computation practice, and math videos. Teachers can even have the ability to create and print their own math worksheets covering any math topic. Math Playground was created by Colleen King, a math teacher and educational consultant.
5). National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for Interactive Mathematics
Grades K – 12This award winning sites encourages student engagement in math through the use of manipulatives that help students visualize relationships. A Java-enabled Web browser is needed to view this site.
The manipulatives address data analysis and probability, numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, and measurement. Each grade level is provided with numerous manipulatives for each of these concepts. Each manipulative provides instructions along with several different activities for the concept which follow the NCTM standards.
6). XP Math Games
Grades 5 - 10Students have a wide selection of games to help them understand and enjoy math on this site. There are numerous games available covering the following topics: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability. Under each different topic, students are able to choose from a variety of games that will challenge their math skills.
The XP Math Games were developed by a middle school math teacher. His goal is to broaden and develop students' math skills.
1). National Math Trail
Grades K - 12Do you want to take math outside the classroom? Try this site. Students go out into the community and discover math all around them. They then write original math problems from what they discovered and submit the problems online. Students can submit photos, drawing, sound recordings or videos to go along with their math problems.
The math problems are indexed according to grade level, math topic and standard. Students or teachers can search for problems by state or by topic. Internet Explorer must be used. Firefox does not work with this site.
2). Hotmath.com
Middle School / High SchoolStudents certainly can have some fun while learning about graphing, factoring, and divisibility on the Hotmath Web site. Students will want to try the exciting Hotmath games such as Catch the Fly, Algebra vs. the Cockroaches, Factotris, and Number Cop. They will learn about graphing, factoring, and divisibility while playing games.
3). Think Math
Grades K -5Harcourt School Publishers presents the Think Math site for kindergarten through 5th grade. There is an extensive list of math activities and games for students provided on this site. The activities are clearly divided by each skill that is presented. It is well organized by grade level and is extremely easy for teachers and students alike to navigate. Teachers and parents will value the quality of these superior activities on this site while students will benefit from working on these enticing activities and games.
The site covers numbers, data analysis, probability, measurement, operations, algebra, and time and money for all levels. Students can sharpen their math skills at school or at home and have fun with these age-appropriate activities. These activities are designed to reinforce and build a variety of important math skills.
4). Math Maven's Mysteries
Grades 3-6Math Maven is all about mysteries. She is always finding a new math mystery and needs help from her "super sleuths" to crack the case. Each mystery focuses on a particular area of math reasoning and computation and requires students to use creative thinking and math skills to find the solution.
The mysteries can be either a teacher-guided lesson or used as an independent student activity. When finished with the mystery, students are asked to discuss and write about the strategies they used to find the answer which will help reinforce the problem-solving skills they used. Students are able to check their answers online. If their answer is not correct, students should be encouraged to go back and try again to solve the mystery.
Printable PDF files are provided for each mystery. Also audio support is available for each section of the lesson so students are able to work independently on these mysteries. The difficulty level of each of the mysteries is indicated on the home page.
5). AAA Math
Grades K - 8The AAA Math Web site covers the following topics: addition, algebra, comparing , counting, decimals, division, equations, estimation, exponents, fractions, geometry, graphs, measurement, mental math, money, multiplication, naming numbers, patterns, percent, place value, practical math, properties, ratios, statistics, and subtraction.
AAA Math provides drills on a variety of math topics. It provides an opportunity for additional practice to help students master math skills. Students can work at their own pace while receiving immediate feedback while working on problems. There are timed practices and challenging games to help increase speed and accuracy.
