1). New York Philharmonic Orchestra
Grades 2 – 7

This amazing site allows students to explore and learn about music in many diverse ways. Students can easily navigate this site on their own to have a remarkable experience learning about music. From the main stage, students are able to visit any activity of their choice.

The Composer's Gallery allows students to learn about famous composers. The Musician's Lounge provides information on different instruments. In the Instrument Lab, students learn how to create their own instruments and hear how they would actually sound. Students are furnished with a choice of eleven different games and activities in the Game Room. Students can watch videos and hear how individual instruments sound in the Instrument Storage Room. In the Dressing Rooms, students meet past and present conductors and soloists and learn about their lives and their careers in music.

2). MoMA Educational Resources
Grades 1 – 12

This is the portal to the education department of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Lesson plans along with images and guides are provided for teachers. An online collection is available for viewing. There are links to high quality interactive Web sites which are appropriate for a variety of grade levels. Numerous audio tours are also available. Flash 6 is required.

 

Second Quarter Sites


1). The Artist’s Toolkit
Grades 4 - 7

The Artist’s Toolkit allows students to explore how artists use visual elements and principles in their work. For each concept taught, students watch an animated demonstration, find examples of the concept in real works of art, and then have an opportunity to create their own composition using the same concept.

An encyclopedia providing information on line, shape, color, space, texture, balance, emphasis, and movement and rhythm is available on this site. The video section of the site shows real artists in action.

Teachers can allow students to study all design principles or choose just certain ones by creating their own “toolkit” for students. The Artist’s Toolkit was designed by artists at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This site is well designed and easy to navigate. Students will love it.


2). The Mozart Project
Grades 6- 12

The Mozart Project supplies considerable information about the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. An in-depth biography of Mozart and his family members is available. His compositions are arranged by date and also by category to make them easy to search. Also available are a few selected essays along with a list of valuable resources and links to other Web sites concerning Mozart.

3. Jazz

The History of Jazz is an impressive site which attempts to depict the sound and flavor of Jazz. It covers the development of Jazz from the time of slavery past the sixties. The site features extensive biographies of numerous jazz musicians. A Jazz Lounge is included where you can play your own jazz music. Lesson plans are available for grades K -12.
